The La Mision Children’s Fund delivers basic food to migrant farmworkers and families East of La Mision. We deliver food up to 15 miles from the Food Bank and to 3 areas. Parents work 10 to 12 hour days normally 6 days a week and transportation is very limited or non-existent. Income is about 15 dollars a day and housing is provided but it is often without heat or running water. We provide the migrant camps the same food we distribute at the La Mision food bank, except we do not give out fresh chicken as they do not have refrigeration. When we have donors who provide them we give out socks, shoes, and other clothing to as many as 125 children. Annually we distribute up to 500 blankets as these areas can get quite cold.
The workers are nearly all Mexican and many remain on the farms year-round. They have little interest in working in the US as the family structure is paramount, The pay is low, housing is very poor, hours long but they now have enough food to provide for the family.
If you can donate we need laundry soap, boxed milk, shampoo, socks, toothpaste and for the children, books with pictures and in Spanish, sweatshirts with a hood. Please consider that we will not survive without cash donations.
