The little orphanage that could…
About the Orphanage
The Morada de Nino Jesus Orphanage was facing closure in December of 2016 due to a lack of funding and resources. None of the staff had been paid in years, supplies were low, medical costs were mounting, and they had just been told they had 30 days to relocate.
Thanks to the help of BECA and the La Mision Children’s Fund, Morada de Nino Jesus Orphanage is now home to 34 children ranging from 4 to 20 years old, half with severe disabilities.
Under the direction of Laura Palafox and the inspiring staff, the work very hard to make the children’s lives better.
A Unique Challenge
We continue to address the challenges of the educational needs of our 30+ children. Most of them come from something so tragic had happened in their lives that it is difficult to understand their ability to just surviving the day. Public school for most of them is just a place to sit. Thanks to the unyielding passion of the staff to make all our children believe they are going to be normal, they will have a chance at adulthood, a good job, a family and most will not pass along the vortex of poverty to their children.
San Juan Bosco, Escuela Primaria
In August of 2018, we took possession of a new school at a new location just three blocks from the orphanage that we are now calling San Juan Bosco, Escuela Primaria. The school opened August 27th. We have been granted a school charter from Tijuana to grant certificates and diplomas. There are a series of buildings that are much more secure than the trailer, which has been broken into at least 3 times in the last year. It allows us to physically organize by grade or ability level. There is a kitchen that gives us the option to provide lunch and that allows the school day to be longer. Room for individual study and tutoring during school and areas for the teachers to prepare or counsel.
Our Orphanage and School are committed to finding a pathway for each child to achieve a normal life. There is still a long way to go to become what we aspire to be, but we have the best director, the best children, the best staff and we now are fortunate enough to have YOU.
If you would like to help these children succeed in life, please consider donating to this very worthy cause.
